Good Citizen of the Year
Each year, JCI Vernon recognizes an outstanding member of the community. This award is handed out to celebrate the accomplishments and successes of an individual who has gone above and beyond to make a difference. The winner is awarded in a “surprise” ceremony, and then recognized by the community during the Vernon Winter Carnival and will be awarded with $500 to donate to the charity of their choice.

We had lots of great nominations for the 2023 Good Citizen of the Year. Gena Barzan stood out as she is a perfect representative of Vernon's willingness to help those in need. Whether they walk on two legs or four, Gena can be found busily organizing aid at the Vernon Auxiliary Thrift Store.
Since 2005, she has provided monthly food hampers, emergency animal food and assistance to residents and their animals impacted by natural disasters.

Gena has chosen to donate the $500 award to Forever Home Sanctuary, an Okanagan farm animal rescue group to help them build a new barn.
