JCI 101
All of the basic information about JCI that you might want to know.
Definitions
"JCI"
JCI stands for Junior Chamber International and as the name implies it has a collective of global chapters.
Jaycee
Members of JCI are called Jaycees.
The Sheriff
An individual appointed by the President in secret to act during the course of the meeting. This role includes collecting a list of "offenses" to be presented at the end of the meeting. The "offenses" can be related to meeting rules, customs, or a funny reason of their choosing. Some chapters assign a monetary value to their "offenses" which is why they are commonly known as fines. Our chapter counts each fine/offense as an entry into a draw to be seen in Kangaroo Court at the end of the year.
Totem/Traveling Jaycee
An object/mascot representative of each chapter that attends all confrences and is passed between members on a monthly basis.
The passing of the Traveling Jaycee allows members to connect on an individual level over a meal or coffee. Each person documents their time with the Traveling Jaycee to report at the next meeting.
Mr./Mrs. It
To ensure no one feels isolated at meetings it is customary that everyone shake hands or acknowledge each other. This can occur before the meeting or during the "break". To ensure everyone is acknowledged an individual is appointed by the President in secret to inform everyone at the end of the meeting who did not shake their hand/acknowledge them.
Senator
A member of JCI who was selected for this title to honour what they have done for the organization as a whole. This distinction allows them to attend events and meetings after they have turned 40 years old. Senators must remember their Senator Number as if asked and unable to recite it they owe the witnessing party a round.
Kangaroo Court
A mock trial held within the bounds and authority of the chapter.
"For the Good of the Chapter"
The last line of the JCI Creed which we ceremoniously end the meeting by going around stating "For the Good of the Chapter" followed by a comment on the meeting or general announcement.
To end the meeting together we recite the full last line of the creed "Service to Humanity is the BEST WORK of LIFE" and get louder and pound the table for the capitalized words.
The Heist
To promote inter-chapter collaboration and interest, "The Heist" is a game held over the course of confrences and when visiting other chapters. Each chapters' Traveling Jaycee is in play (or anything of non-personal value, ie. must belong to the chapter) the goal is to take/possess another chapter's Traveling Jaycee by any means. There are specific rules as to how stealing can be accomplished. Once you have the item you have to ransom it back within a predetermined time.
